Whistle Blower | | Heeps of us Whistle, but unfortunately not many of us, very well. Considering the fact that it’s the easiest instrument to play, why is this the case? I’ve been Whistling since I was knee high to a grasshopper, I first heard my parents Whistling Classic, by the by, then as a Hitch-Hiking teenager, toeing my patch of tarmac inwait of a ride and in answer to a need for backing when I didn´t have a tape deck with me,I developed a tongue technique enabling me to effectively accompany myself. I am an autodidact. | | | Special Abilities People say they have never heard anything like it, they say I’m able to Whistle two notes simultaneously, both are unfortunately not true. To create musical tones at the purity and speed necessary, I simply move my Tongue from it’s normal position (while Whistling) in the middle of my mouth, over my lower teeth to just touching the inside lower lip, this changes the tone abruptly enough for me to be able to Whistle clearly and precisely at least four notes a second. This coupled with my ability to Whistle while breathing in and out, allows me to carry a piece through, without the listener noticing a pause to take breath. Some say my Vocal agility is my primary skill, I see it slightly differently. I’m not a great one for remembering texts, but after many a performance I’ve been asked “what language was that”? Due to my lack of a sense for texts, I basically try my best to either sound like I’m singing a text, or I make the vocal sounds necessary to enhance the music being played to great effect, this is where my vocal backing skills kicks in. I was the first one to come up with Windows 98 in 93, I now call it "Windows 3000"
When I enter a performance space I am more often than not asked if I have my Window with me. Hasn’t everyone’s cleaned a window or two in their life? Well that’s exactly how I discovered my next instrument. The window I currently play is a single pane 4mm x 75cm x 1m18cm, it needs to be large to allow me to hold a vibration, but a smaller one can also be composed upon. Champagne, Wine, Ale or just plain Water is sprinkled onto a near horizontal glass, then applying variable pressure on all ten Digits, Hands and Forearms, Vibratos are created when they skid across the surface, the liquid allows friction between the finger/hand/armprint and the glass surface, the digits can be applied individually creating ten vibratos simultaneously, they and the flat of the hand compose the mid to mid high range, the knuckles, the high range, the sides of the hands and the forearms the lower range, I also drum with the fingers on the surface of the glass from time to time. This instrument is best seen live as not only is it hilarious to watch, but is a visual and musical work of art. | | | My Aims | | | Well certainly not a Whistle Stop Career and Obviously a solo career. Due to a life time Whistling to other people’s music everywhere and which way,I’d very much like to back and or enhance other musicians compositions, there are so sooooo many compositions that could be covered with the use of my Whistle or Voice, to imitate or replace the individual instruments and using conventional and not so conventional instruments. I’d like to make projects involving Whistle/Voice in the work place i.e. Building Sites among others, in nature, using its myriad of sound back drops. For several years I’ve been experimenting with the building of compositions using purely whistle tracks. Last but not least I’d like to record funny and original music for children. to do this properly though I need the use of professional equipment and competent technicians. Professional experience | | | I feel the Music. Since the late 1980´s in London then over the last 16yrs in Berlin, I’ve worked with several bands in the underground Punk, Techno, World Music & Jazz, improvisation subculture i.e. Konrad Bauer and ,Stern Wie Staub amongst others, as well as Daniel Goode, founding my own band the, Internaturals and the contemporary experimental improvisation band for children, Abenteuer Des Klangs (Adventure of sounds) and a weekly improvisation club for musicians in the mid 1990´s. I´ve performed on the same stage as Ilse Werner,Tamàs Hacki, Alexander Novitz & Shiela Harrod . I´ve jammed and sessioned it, in and out of clubs all over Berlin over this time span, going into the studio to record a Demonstration of abilities on the Demo CD Hwistlian in 2005. | | | Music is the most beautiful and creative language I can or could ever express myself in, a listener may decipher it, feel it & comprehend it, but toFugue its tonal beauty is alone my thing . |
