CommentHey Michelle,
Congrats on finding your niche! Many young adults don't even know what they want to do with their lives after high school, and you're already driven for success. I know you will achieve it, but the road you're about to embark on is tougher than you can imagine! You've probably heard that before, but here are some of the things I've learned from the biz, and if you remember them, it may help you stay on track:
*Don't work for anyone's approval except your own-it only makes you doubt yourself.
*Don't let anyone in the busines take away your joy and passion for acting, or make you forget it. Unfortunately, most people in the business are not interested in art or artists, not even in your well-being! To them it is all about money, and YOU are the product they are selling. If you let them, they will take full advantage of you, chew you up and reject you in order to make money. While rejection and trials are inevitable in show business, do not let their callousness hurt you. Hold on to your integrity and passion, stand up for yourself and don't be afraid to say "no". You should try to push yourself out of your comfort zone, but you don't have to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. It's not worth losing your self. There is always another opportunity.
*Never dim your light for anyone; Whether it's an agent telling you that you have to be a different type or your own decision to be humble and gracious, unlike the countless stars in Hollywood who seem to be so spoiled. By dimming your light, or dumming down your talent, you're only compromising your gifts, which doesn't allow them to be noticed or appreciated or put to good use, and does no good for anyone. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, and those who are squeaky enought to get attention are usually not very nice. This doesn't mean that you must be selfish or unethical to succeed, but you shouldn't let negativity throw you off your game. Rise above it like a star. "Sing as if nobody's listening, dance as if nobody's watching, and live each moment as if it is your last."
*Most importantly, remember that the business will always be there! It is more important to live your life than to miss out on it for the sake of building your career, which can take years (It took Audrey Hepburn 8 years to achieve her success). There will always be opportunities for work available, and the more you know yourself, the more you will be able to pick and choose the best opportunities that suit you. Life goes by too quickly. A career is not worth losing your heart and soul over---and believe me, there are really people out there that will try to take that from you, if only for their own personal gain, so keep an eye out for scams and scam artists. Besides, by living your own life and experiencing it, you will be a more interesting individual and as such, will be able to bring so much more to your work.
In order to survive as an artist in the business world, we must learn to build the hide of a rhinocerous while maintaining the heart of a child.
Keep your chin up and Break a leg.
Best Wishes,
Joe

CommentHi Michelle,

Thanks for the add. I see that you're looking into representation. My agent in Portland is Damon Jones at Actors in Action. (www.actorsinaction.com) If you're interested you'll need a headshot, resume, and a monologue to audition.

Also, Nextcat is great, but the best networking site for the local industry is Oregon Media Network. (www.oregonmedianetwork.org) Pretty much everyone who is local is on there.

See you around, I hope.
