Award winning composer Herman Witkam has a background in classical, popular, jazz and ethnic music. Growing up in Leiden, known as the birth town of historic artists such as Rembrandt, Herman developed a keen interest in music at early age. Nearing the end of high school, Herman started gaining interest in music production and film music, and studied recording and mixing techniques at the SAE institute. After graduating from SAE, Herman started his studies of Composition for the Media, at the Utrecht School of the Arts, Faculty of Art, Media & Design in Hilversum. Around the same time, he discovered the sounds of ethnic instruments, like the Armenian Duduk, Native American flute, Nigerian Udu and the Chinese Bawu. These instruments have become an important part of Herman's composition process, and Herman's large collection of instruments from all over the world is still growing. Some of these instruments have been captured in the RAW collection, an on-line source of audio samples started by Herman to share some of his
ethnic instruments with other composers across the globe.
