"The Hidden Mandala" at http://cdbaby.com/cd/marcrossigroup
I am a Jazz-World Music Performer and Recording artist (Saxophones, Flute); Author of Jazz Improvisation Books (Creative Jazz Exercises Vol I-III, available at Aebersold.com); Producer of Environmentally based Videos; Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence Recipient, City of Boston, MA (1989); New England Regional EPA Environmental Award Recipient (2003), visit www.fhbwi.org for more information about the First Herring Brook Watershed Initiative; I also teach in the Berklee College of Music Saxophone Weekend and 5-Week Summer Performance Programs and have worked for the Boston Pro Arts Consortium, Boston Latin Academy, South Shore Conservatory of Music, Berklee, and other institutions as a curriculum consultant and clinician.
Currently I am recording and performing with the Marc Rossi Group; writing music for my own group and other ensembles; and leading or being a sideman in various groups in the New England area. I hope to be launching a community public education multi-media project with Boston area musicians soon that combines musical performance with environmental education.
Besides being a performer I am an educator (jazz, technology, environmental science) involved with urban school students in the Boston Public Schools and the international student community at Berklee College of Music. Both populations are exciting to work with but clearly reflect a striking imbalance in the way music education is provided to children of the world, especially those who are socially and economically challenged. I also see a correlation between the way young people view both music and the natural environment as vital and deeply personal aspects of their lives that are threatened by decision makers tainted by greed...hopefully this will change.
In my music I like to take chances and express positive energy toward my audience, especially my students, hopefully you'll like the examples below. Top video is the Marc Rossi Group at Berklee College in March, 2006 featuring my solo on Marc's composition called "Feast or Famine". Marc is on piano, Bill Urmson on bass and Mauricio Zottarelli on drums. The next video is Marc's group at Berklee in March 2007 with special guest Bruce Arnold on guitar. The solo section of Marc's composition, "Hidden Mandala" is featured. The bottom video is a clip of "Wind Power" a Berklee Summer 5-Week Summer Performance Program group I put together each year that includes as many as twenty sax players from around the world. A section of my composition "Bean City Blues" is featured.
Check out my two sax solo on "Veiled Woman of Iran" by Marc Rossi...my solo is dedicated to the master multi-instrumentalist, Rashaan Roland Kirk.
