Scottish Writer, Composer, Actor
MARK ROBERTSON trained as an actor at Edinburgh’s Queen Margaret College, after which he began a long association with Scottish Opera’s education division. Initially a workshop performer, he went on to devise and write six successful children’s shows, culminating in the full-scale musical Bet Your Life. Mark supplied book and lyrics and went on to direct the show to public and critical acclaim. As an actor, Mark has performed throughout the UK, including long West End stints in From a Jack to a King (Ambassador’s Theatre), Crazy For You (Prince Edward) and The Buddy Holly Story (Strand Theatre). During this time, Mark wrote book, music and lyrics for Marrying Meg (the only musical ever to reach the finals of the UK’s prestigious Vivian Ellis Prize twice) and the screenplay, Elvis Mowed Our Lawn. Since returning to his native Scotland, Mark has become a regular writer on numerous TV series, among them Stacey Stone (CBBC Scotland), Barking (Granada Kids/CBL), Jess the Border Collie (IWC Media), and Thomas the Tank Engine (Hit entertainment). He was also awarded a EuroPaws bursary for his original script Tin Man, a feature-length SF drama. In 2003 Mark returned to Scottish Opera to write and direct the children’s musical Auntie Janet Saves the Planet. The show was revived for a 2005 tour. In 2006, Mark’s musical Marrying Meg again reached the final of a prestigious international competition, this time the Cameron Mackintosh sponsored Highland Quest for a New Musical. Mark’s most recent work includes two scripts for the new Cartoon Network/Kindle Entertainment sitcom My Spy Family, and three for Aardman Animation’s new CGI series Chop Socky Chooks. Mark’s association with Aardman continues as he is now developing his own series with them.
