Hello my name is Scobra and I'm a full time producer of music and I indulge in Photography and Film Making. I produce about 10 tracks to completion per week and I'm always looking for super cool artists to collab with. Honestly - I get 90% of my work through word of mouth but on occasion I get blessed with a cool gig via the net - god bless. I get the job done and I will toil for you as long as your not some kind of an ass.
I began my long and checkered career as a bottom-level professional soldier - then briefly forayed into trauma medicine - a subject I love to this day. I will tell you this - just having a smidgen of these experiences taught me to see through people as if they were a pain of glass. No worries though - I do my best to find love in any equation. After checking out of the geo-political scene, and failing miserably at a teenage marriage that spanned the Euro-American divide, I made the fool-hardy decision to be totally involved in music. To create a “comfort zone”, I decided to pursue a PHD in physics along with an MD which launched a long association with my best friend and mentor Dr Dennis Harp. After about 4 months of class Dr Harp called me in his office and ceremoniously awarded me a PHD in physics. I was amazed for I had not even begun to "earn" such an honor. Dr Harp subsequently explained that he was certain that my life’s mission was "real" and college was no place for a non-robot. He further explained that humans - though often nice enough - were for the most part lost little drones and perhaps I should avoid these energy patterns”. “Even the smart and talented ones are often guided by little more than greed or validation. "Few sail the true stream of the soul!" he advised.
So I started my new music career as a roadie, working for the legendary Robert "Bubba" Neligh down in San Angelo Texas. My luck couldn’t have been better. It was tough, grueling work but you quickly learned a lot about professional sound re-enforcement and life in general. I stayed on this tangent for 4 solid years - worked for 3 companies on a lot of shows, all over the place. I saw some amazing shows and I saw some crappy ones. All of the older roadies informed me that the place to be was in cinema - as in making films. The work resembled the work I already doing - and not to toot my own horn - but I had set designed a particular show due to an emergency and the band in questioned was so blown away they quickly spread the word that Scobra had "taste". This was something I had never been accused of before so I must confess it did pique my imagination that perhaps there was more to life than simply making sure the vocal sound was happening (my usual task) at some cool gig somewhere out there in the touring world. With this in mind I eventually forayed into fashion and eventually worked for Nylon, Bikini, and Raygun Magazines. I was quickly learning the true depths of human greed and vanity.
So around this time, my best friend Dr Harp calls me and orders me to Montana - a place he was certain was the best place for us to start a super creative film company. He was certain I was the best man for the job of camera man and music producer. Some of our missions were large - like the co-ordination of science teachings from K thru 16 as they say - from kindergarten right through college for populations in the millions. At this time I also started a local band that mainly played covers and the originals we did play well -- sucked. The Bozeman Montana music scene was an illustrious blend of musos deeply immersed and addicted to all things provincial. I’d already learned the international music scene inside and out - now I was learning to deal with provincial (i.e. small town) scenage. As in most small towns, your level of talent, fashionista rating, and all of that stuff is "extremely important" blah blah blah -
So like i said - I started this band right after I arrived in Bozeman MT. Instead of pandering to the provincials - I choose 3 - 16 year old eager but inexperienced musicians to form this band. We practiced for a whole year and then proceeded to be one of the most popular bands the area has ever seen. It really was a phenomenon. This experience lasted a good 3 years or so. This band was the only band I ever truly fronted and it was a cool experience. I wasn’t much of a singer at the time but I was the probably the best singer out of the 4 people invovled. So we traveled around and I sang all of these shows. It was pretty semi-pro stuff – but people just loved it for some reason. I do know I learned a ton. I learned that often times’ people are more concerned about the experience of seeing a band and care less about technical proficiency. At this time I was elected to a political position - President of the states "Air Force Association". I didnt mean or even want this position but i kicked ass at it - convening with such entities as the President of the United States and the Joint Cheifs of Staff. I held this position for three years or so before i realized that a true blue - extremely liberal - critical thinker such as I has no place in the world of the the military. My dad was an Officer in the military so I am sure I was doing it for him. It was time to leave this scene for good.
Soon I was called to be a Music Director for this film "2004 - A Light Knights' Odyssey" - a film featuring Samuel L. Jackson and Sarah Michelle Geller to name just two. On top of that - this film was connected to the US Space Program so all kinds of neat things were happening that were very mutli-dimensional. I started doing side projects for the Space Program (NASA JPL) as well - all kinds of crazy cool stuff that I love to talk about. I soon made the decision to come to LA in 2000 and have never looked back since. I went from local pip-squeak to cavorting with some real heavy hitters in the music and film scenes.
To be continued.
Next – My experiences in Los Angeles – a place that is truly unto itself.
