Lisa Soland came to Los Angeles as a performer but works now as both performer and playwright. She toured as the lead singer in the "Swing Sisters" and also starred as Bonnie opposite Helen Reddy in "Anything Goes." Some of her other favorite roles were Zelda Fitzgerald in William Luce's "Luce Women," Pirate Jenny in "Three Penny Opera," Irene Malloy in "Hello Dolly!," Elsa Shrader in "The Sound of Music," and Mary in "Vanities," where she was told by the playwright that she was the best to ever play the part. She also played Elaine in "Arsenic and Old Lace" alongside Mary Wickes, Alice Ghostly and Patrick Wayne, John Wayne's son.
Lisa Soland's plays, The Name Game and Waiting were published by Samuel French, she received the Artistic Director Achievement award for her original comedy, Happy Birthday, Baby! and her drama The ReBirth won her the Hawthornden Fellowship. Cabo San Lucas received first prize in the 2004 Scriptwriting/Houston National Playwriting Contest and the American Theatre Co-op 2005 contest for one-act plays.
Waiting is also included in Smith and Kraus’ anthology WOMEN PLAYWRIGHTS: THE BEST PLAYS OF 2003 and monologues from Cabo San Lucas and Waiting are in BEST WOMEN’S STAGE MONOLOGUES OF 2003. Monologues from The ReBirth, Red Roses and Waiting can also be found in Applause Books’ THE BEST WOMEN’S MONOLOGUES FOR THE MILLENNIUM and THE BEST MEN’S MONOLOGUES FOR THE MILLENNIUM.
Her ten-minute plays have received numerous productions as well as publications. “An Earthquake,” first directed by Charles Nelson Reilly, is included in Dramatic Publishing’s anthology 35 IN 10, “Different” is part of Smith and Kraus’ THE BEST TEN-MINUTE PLAYS OF 2005 (2 Actors), “The Same Thing” is in THE BEST TEN-MINUTE PLAYS OF 2006 (2 Actors), and “Knots” is in THE BEST TEN-MINUTE PLAYS OF 2006 (3 Actors).
Ms. Soland is a member of AEA, SAG, AFTRA as well as The Dramatists Guild of America, Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights and the International Center for Women Playwrights. Founder of one of Los Angeles’ premiere playwright workshops – THE ALL ORIGINAL PLAYWRIGHT WORKSHOP, where she works as Artistic Director and teacher, she has helped to inspire countless original playreadings and productions.
For the fall of 2006, Ms. Soland headed up the MFA playwriting program at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. She lives in Los Angeles where she has worked as an actress, singer, director and producer, but primarily now as a playwright, with her work being produced around the globe.
