A writer. The stage in the past, but trying to break into films. Also have the books and lyrics of a musical awaiting the right composer!
Richard has been writing for several years and has had plays performed on the fringe in London. His last play was Critics Choice in Time Out, and a previous production, “Distant Meadows”, was premiered as part of the Norwich Triennial before opening in London. He currently has a play called “Harry and Haw-Haw” with a new London company called Daring Shot, who are preparing for possible production this year.
He has a play called “The Near Room” based on “The Royal Game” by Stefan Zweig written but without a home at the moment.
In a previous life Richard was a failed rock guitarist. This has influenced him towards a couple of pieces of writing. He has written the book and lyrics to a musical called “The Empty Canvas” and is looking for a composer – knowing he needs a real musician. The log line for “The Empty Canvas” is “circus, sex and Salvador Dali”.
He has also written a novel called “Judy and The Garlands” which is about a group of musicians who try to make it the second time around.
He has been trying to move into film scripts, and has a short film. “Lipstick”, slated for production in the spring in Cardiff. He has several other short scripts written but not in production – one of which was published in
He has written full length script, one of which “The Third Eye” was featured at a Rocliffe reading. He has another full length script, “Bognor”, written and is looking to find interest in it.
Richard also writes for children and a play, “Undercover Sam”, was a runner-up in a national competition for children’s plays. Disappointingly, he still hasn’t managed to find a production for it. He is currently adapting his own novel for children called “The Black Godiva” into a film script.
“Distant Meadows” Review – Eastern Daily Press.
“Richard Fitchett’s “Distant Meadows” which had its premiere at Norwich last night rescues from obscurity a Victorian heroine. Octavia Hill was celebrated in her day for her work on behalf of the poor which lead to changes in the law. Such was her awareness of people’s need for space that she became one of the founders of the National Trust.
As the play makes clear she was an intensely energetic woman who could refuse a beggar a penny on a question of principle while working herself to a frazzle for the general betterment of slum dwellers.
... One of the great successes of the play is the contrast it makes between Octavia and her less ambition, more human sister.
The cadences of speech used by an earlier age are well caught by the author, and the production by Diana Devlin is a lively one.”
“Silence The Mother Tongue” Review – Time Out.
A bare tree stump stands at the back of the stage. Two men while away the time with conversation. But this is no bleak Beckettian fable. The setting is a wood in Poland at night and the two unlikely looking figures (they’re disguised as bird-watchers) are in fact policeman armed with binoculars and watching a distant house wherein lurks a political undesirable.
Finally though it’s carried off by the wit in the writing. The play lasts less than an hour but deals thoughtfully and entertainingly with major issues.”
