Tillman B. Franks (born September 29, 1920, Stamps, Arkansas -passed away October 26, 2006) was an American bassist, and Songwriter who was also the manager for a number of country music artists, including Johnny Horton, David Houston, Webb Pierce, Claude King and the Carlisles.
On 3 April 1948, Franks made history when he played bass with the Bailes Brothers on the first night of the Louisiana Hayride Radio Broadcast. He later booked artists as head of the Louisiana Hayride Artist Bureau and was instrumental in getting Elvis to the show where he had his start. He also managed several acts, including Pierce, Claude King, Slim Whitman, David Houston, the Carlisles, Jimmy C. Newman and Johnny Horton
Franks was the sole writer of Johnny Horton's first No. 1 single, 1959's "When It's Springtime in Alaska (It's Forty Below)." He and Horton were co-writers of "Honky-Tonk Man," Horton's 1956 hit, that Dwight Yoakam also recorded as his first single. In 1960, he co-wrote the hit single "Sink the Bismark" with Horton.
My Father TIllman Franks was a rare and unique individual with many talents. All one has to do is type his name in--any 'browser' online, and they will discover many things about his wonderful Talents and accomplishments to the Music Industry.
Names Like Johnny Horton --David Houston-- Hank Williams Jr__Webb Pierce__Elvis Presley__Merle Kilgore and many more were profoundly affected by the intervention of Tillman Franks as Manager--Promoter__Song writer--and Entrepreneur. Without which it may be said that the then-- Music Industry may have taken some very different turns, had it not been for my Dad and his unique style and understanding of what was needed in those years, and which artists were the ones to make the hits and lead the way for many others to come. Tillman Franks was a "One of a Kind" and there never has been one since like him, with the sense of direction that he keenly felt. He was a heck of a guy and a wonderful Father
